Advanced Manufacturing

CENELEC/TC 65X 'Industrial-process measurement, control and automation'- works out methods for safe and secure communication protocols for wired and wireless industrial automation applications, some of which are included in the 2.4 GHz industrial, scientific and medical radio band (ISM).

Home and Building electronic systems

CLC/TC 205 'Home and Building Electronic Systems (HBES)'- is responsible for the development of the EN 50491 series "General requirements for Home and Building Electronic Systems (HBES) and Building Automation and Control Systems (BACS)", and notably EN 50491-11 "Smart Metering. Application Specifications. Simple External Consumer Display". CLC/TC 205 has also launched a new work item on IoT Semantic Ontology Model Description (prEN 50090-6-2). Moreover, CLC/TC 205 is working on data modelling in the standard series EN 60491; first step, for energy management in home and buildings; second step, for interaction with the residential and building premises, which will benefit the management of premises within the smart cities architecture.

Smart Grids and Smart Metering

Smart grids and smart meters mark a new development on the path towards greater consumer empowerment and integration of renewable energy sources into the grid and higher energy efficiency, whereas making a considerable contribution to reducing greenhouse emissions.
The CEN-CENELEC-ETSI Coordination Groups on Smart Energy Grids (CG-SEG) and Smart Meters (CG-SM) advise on European requirements relating to smart energy standardization, identifying and prioritizing gaps that could prevent the deployment of smart grids and smart meters in Europe, addressing cybersecurity, data protection and privacy aspects, as well as ensuring interoperability within smart metering and smart grids systems (as well as smart appliances, smart home systems, buildings, etc.).

More information available from the CEN-CENELEC website.

Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity has been identified as one of the standardization priorities, since cyber-threats impact a multitude of sectors. CENELEC has published as European Standards the revised versions of the EN ISO/IEC 27000 series on information security management systems, under the responsibility of CEN-CLC/JTC 13 'Cybersecurity and data protection'. In the automated manufacturing sector, CLC/TC 65X 'Industrial-process measurement, control and automation' is responsible for the development of the EN IEC 62443 series, and has notably developed EN IEC 62443-4-1 'Security for industrial automation and control systems – secure product development lifecycle requirements'. Several other CENELEC Technical Committees are addressing cybersecurity: CLC/TC 8X 'System aspects of electrical energy supply', CLC/TC 9X 'electrical equipment and systems for railways', CLC/TC 205 'home and building electronic systems'.
