CENELEC network enlarges with addition of new Affiliate: the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO)

Brussels, Belgium, 2012-06-08

The European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) will enlarge its network on 1 July 2012, when the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO) officially becomes an Affiliate of CENELEC.

Meeting in Albena (Bulgaria) on 6 June, the General Assembly of CENELEC formally decided to accept an application from JSMO to become an Affiliate of the organisation.

The Affiliates of CENELEC are National Committees with responsibility for Electrotechnical Standardization in countries covered by the European Neighbourhood Policy of the EU.   From 1 July 2012, CENELEC will have 12 Affiliates (in Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Israel, Jordan, Libya, Montenegro, Morocco, Serbia, Tunisia and Ukraine).

Having the status of Affiliate allows National Committees in eligible countries the option of participating in CENELEC Technical Committees (TCs) as observers. When an Affiliate chooses to participate in a particular TC, it is obliged to accept and implement any European Standards (ENs) that are developed and adopted by the TC concerned. The adoption of ENs enables these countries to increase their trade with the European Single Market.

The President of CENELEC, David Dossett, has welcomed the decision to grant Affiliate status to the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO). “This decision allows us to strengthen our cooperation with JSMO. By working with our colleagues in Jordan and with all our Affiliates we can actively encourage them to adopt European Standards, which is a necessary condition for expanding investments and trade. This will bring major economic benefits both to Europe and to our partner countries,” he said.

In 2000, Jordan joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) and signed the Technical Barriers to Trade Agreement, thereby also accepting the WTO Code of Good Practice for the Preparation, Adoption, and Application of Standards.

The Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO) became an Affiliate of CEN (European Committee for Standardization) in January 2008 and an Associate Member of IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) in March 2010.

In the context of an Association Agreement between Jordan and the European Union, Jordan intends to sign an Agreement on Conformity Assessment and Acceptance of Industrial Products (ACAA) covering selected priority sectors including electrical and electronic products.  Therefore, Jordan wishes to harmonize relevant legislation and standards with the EU.
