This proceeds after having confirmation that the IEC candidate standards were approved at the IEC final stage of development by the majority of the European national committees entitled to vote and that no European national committee raised significant concerns for the application of these standards in the European countries. The common modifications prepared have to be limited as far as possible and to be consistent with the WENRA (Western European Nuclear Regulators’ Association) aims for an international harmonised approach to reactor safety. All proposals for common modifications have to be justified. If a common modification proposal is controversial then the fall back position is to keep the text of the IEC/SC45A standard unchanged, given that the IEC/SC45A standards implement the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) safety principles.
