Without any doubt, safety has always been CENELEC's flagship.
When asked for CENELEC's performance indicator, the best answer that can be imagined is the rhetorical question "what would the Low Voltage Directive be without CENELEC standards?".
The self-evident answer is even reinforced when considering that products that are complying with our standards are daily used by millions of European citizens. This inherently demonstrates the fitness for use of CENELEC standards in the market for consumer as well as industrial goods. It is to be highlighted that currently an effort is being put on adapting the standards for household appliances to the new social climate where these are more and more used by children and disabled.
In particular CENELEC is also contributing to operational safety through supporting activities related for examples to the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) and the Physical Agents Directive (2004/40/EC) for the protection of workers against electromagnetic fields. Further activities comprise standards on the operation of electric installations and wind turbines and tools and protective equipment for working in the vicinity of electric installations.
Other fields cover standards in support of the Medical Devices Directives (93/42/EEC, 90/385/EEC and 98/79/EC) and the ATEX Directive (94/9/EC).
