China is a powerful actor on the global economic scene. To shed some light on Chinese standardization and Quality Infrastructure activities, the three ESOs (CEN, CENELEC and ETSI) together with the European Commission and EFTA launched a cooperation initiative aimed at increasing the cooperation between Europe and China in standardization-related matters, appointing a SESEC (Seconded European Standardization Expert in China).
The overall objectives of the project are to:
- Promote European and international standards in China;
- Improve contacts with different levels of the Chinese administration, industry and standardization bodies;
- Improve the visibility and understanding of the European Standardization System (ESS) in China;
- Gather regulatory and standardization intelligence.
The project was launched in 2006 for a first phase of three years and was followed by a second phase until 2012. Currently a new phase is in its early developments.
Since its start, the SESEC project has brought enhanced visibility to the European Standardization System; increased cooperation between European and Chinese standardization bodies; and provided continued support to European industry facing standardization related issues in view of market access to China.
