CEN and CENELEC launched the FLES exercise in 2005 to adapt to the new global context and shape the future of standardization. A Working Group was established and produced a strategic paper – the FLES Whitebook – that identified challenges and opportunities. The detailed analysis of this whitebook led in 2007 to the approval of six recommendations that focus on areas where combined synergies was needed. In 2009 much progress was made under recommendation 5 “back office” with the move of CEN and CENELEC to common premises, the further alignment of the IT architecture and the full development of the CEN-CENELEC Cooperation Package. The latter was approved by both General Assemblies in November 2009, entering into effect on 1 January 2010.
