The 44th General Assembly of CENELEC took place on June 3rd in Berlin at the kind invitation of German member DKE. Parallel events organized to celebrate the recent Enlargement of the European Union already started the day before. Among these, a double Open Session with 4 keynote speakers addressing the European political, economic and industrial implications of Enlargement, and a Panel Discussion that gathered representatives from all standardization stakeholders.
Regarding Statutory matters, and following changes in Belgian law, the General Assembly approved the new statutes of the organization. It was also agreed to hold synchronized General Assemblies with sister organization CEN in 2005 on a tryout basis. This will happen in Budapest next year organized by common CEN/CENELEC member MSZT.
The General Assembly was also the occasion to renew the CENELEC Administrative Board. Vice-Presidents Start and Trondvold were re-elected for a second 2-year term beginning on January 1st 2005. A nomination for a 4th Vice-President was made during the meeting and will be voted by correspondence in the next few weeks. The composition of the CA for 2005 remains, for the time being, as follows:
· President: Dr. Ulrich Spindler (Germany)
· Vice-President: Mr. David Start (United Kingdom)
· Vice-President: Mr. Tore Trondvold (Norway)
· Vice-President: Dr. Luigi Ricossa (Italy)
· Treasurer: Mr. Olivier Gourlay (France)
President Spindler thanked outgoing Vice-President Domingo-Pagés for his commitment with CENELEC and its members. Mr. Domingo-Pagés will finish his second and last term of office at the end of this year.
All meetings and events organized for this year’s General Assembly were somehow related to celebrating Enlargement, to exploit its opportunities and to tackle its possible threats. In an emotive ceremony during the official dinner, President Spindler announced the names and welcomed all new CENELEC members one by one.
