Standardization has an essential contribution to make "towards developing innovation and competitiveness, by facilitating access to markets, enabling interoperability between new and existing products, services and processes, enhancing protection of users, giving consumers confidence in innovations and disseminating research results". In order to address this challenge, the CEN and CENELEC Technical Boards agreed on an 'integrated approach' to innovation, research and standardization. Following an assessment of the economic benefits that standardization brings to researchers and innovators, the 'integrated approach' advocates the consideration of standardization during all stages of a research or innovation project.
